Transport choices in Spain

Spain has extensive train and scheduled bus networks, including high-speed rail between major mainland cities. These are worth comparing with private transport when your journey is between central stations. Island travel needs a separate plan from mainland road journeys. Spain’s official first-visit transport advice.

Mainland cities and island arrivals

Identify the exact airport and final hotel, then state whether the itinerary remains on the mainland or includes a Balearic or Canary island. If the group flies or takes a ferry between destinations, provide those bookings and say whether separate vehicles are needed at each end. A transfer in Barcelona is a different request from a multi-day route through Madrid and Andalusia.

For the local part of your request, explore Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.

Match the airport connection to the onward railway station

Airport transport works differently across Spain. In Málaga, the C1 suburban railway links the airport with the city and coastal destinations, with Málaga María Zambrano providing an interchange for longer-distance trains. A party continuing by rail should name that station and its booked train, rather than requesting a transfer to an unspecified city centre.

Use this same level of precision for a wider mainland itinerary: record the arrival airport, actual rail departure station, hotel and return airport as separate places. If one subgroup continues by train while another goes to a hotel, supply the separate headcounts and bags so the road movements can be assessed. See the Málaga arrival guide for that local connection.

Quote the mainland or island programme

For a mainland tour, give the order of overnight stays and any station transfers. For an island stay, specify the airport or pier and whether the group changes accommodation. Ask for separate arrival and return arrangements when the flights differ.

Use our airport-transfer guide for flight arrivals, and coach-hire guide for a continuous touring vehicle. Confirm the passenger and luggage capacity, any parking or crossing costs and the vehicle arrangements for each island.

Choose the regional road programme and separate the crossings

Andalusian stays

For Almería, Córdoba, Granada, Huelva or Jaén, start with the guide for the actual hotel base and note the permitted visitor entrance to be checked. A day of sightseeing needs separate arrival, parking and return arrangements. Show the order of overnight stays before asking for one vehicle across the Andalusian programme.

Northern and northwestern stops

Use Bilbao and San Sebastián for the relevant Basque Country stays. For Lugo, Ourense or Santiago de Compostela, the local guide helps prepare the Galician hotel and collection details. If the itinerary also includes Logroño, show its place in the dated route rather than grouping all northern destinations into an assumed short transfer.

Inland accommodation and touring days

The Burgos, Palencia, Segovia and Valladolid guides help prepare the local stops in Castile and León. For Albacete, Ciudad Real, Talavera de la Reina and Toledo, set out the actual visits and overnight accommodation in Castile-La Mancha. State whether the group and luggage stay with one vehicle or connect between bases by rail.

Other mainland bases

Use Badajoz and Cáceres for an Extremadura programme, identifying any continuation into Portugal. The Zaragoza, Girona and Valencia guides cover different mainland bases and help prepare their own arrival and hotel briefs. These are alternatives or specified itinerary stops, not a suggested single-day route.

Palma and Melilla are separate arrival programmes

Palma de Mallorca is on Mallorca: record the flight or sailing and the island’s hotel transfers. For Melilla, likewise identify the actual air or sea arrival from mainland Spain and the local collection arrangements. Neither should be appended to a mainland road itinerary without the crossing, passenger arrangements and any separate vehicle being confirmed.

Your Spain transport questions

Does a Spain quote automatically include island transport?

No. Name each island and any connecting flight or ferry in the request. The quotation must explicitly confirm the local vehicles and connections included.

What details are needed for group transport in Spain?

For a mainland tour, give the order of overnight stays and any station transfers. For an island stay, specify the airport or pier and whether the group changes accommodation. Ask for separate arrival and return arrangements when the flights differ. Confirm the proposed vehicle and quote inclusions before booking.

Is an airport-to-city transfer enough detail for a Spanish rail connection?

No. Give the booked departure station and train as well as the airport. In Málaga, María Zambrano is the mainline interchange on the C1 airport rail route; a city-centre address alone does not identify that connection.

Prepare the local stops

Use the Benidorm guide to prepare the mainland hotel and arrival transfer. The Palma de Mallorca guide concerns a separate island programme: identify the flight or ferry, the arrival terminal and the local vehicle required on Mallorca. If both stays form part of one holiday, quote the road duties around the crossing explicitly.

Connect the arrival airport with the actual destination

Start with the airport on the flight booking, then identify the actual hotel or venue entrance in the relevant city guide. Include the terminal, passenger and luggage totals, and required arrival time. The operator must confirm the collection point and route; a geographic airport reference does not establish a passenger service or transfer availability.
